Metamorphosis of Words:
How Writing Assignments Shaped My Voice.
As a freshman at The City College of New York (CCNY), I find myself standing at the threshold of higher education, filled with curiosity. At eighteen years old, I admit to my lack of experience in the real world. I am keenly aware of the significance of formality and the weight of importance in writing, understanding that effective communication is not only a skill but a cornerstone of success in academia and beyond. Throughout the course, I was able to shape my mind into that who thinks of the ideal.
At the start of the assignment, I doubted my ability to create a resume that would impress a hiring manager. I felt I lacked the experience necessary to compete with other applicants. However, as I worked through the assignment, I applied the techniques and tips from class to my resume and cover letter. Gradually, I noticed a significant improvement in my resume’s appearance compared to my initial expectations.
Starting the lab report assignment, I was unsure of what to put into a lab report, and how to go through with doing so. I was lost not knowing how to find a credible source, how to cite works, and how to use these works along with my own experiments to synthesis a valid report. While completing this assignment I learned how to take information from experimental trials and display them in such a way, that the reader has an easy time reading the information. Not only was I able to gain such a skill but I also gained the skill of being able to connect my work to other credible studies.
Working on a group proposal project, my favorite project, helped me understand the professional world better. I learned to work well with others, listen to different ideas, and share tasks. It improved my communication skills, as I had to explain my thoughts clearly and listen to feedback. I got better at managing time and resources, writing professional documents, and speaking in front of others. Leading parts of the project taught me responsibility. Applying what I learned in class to real-world situations made my studies feel more relevant. Feedback from my team helped me grow both personally and professionally.
Working on a technical description class project boosted my confidence and skills. At first, I was nervous about explaining complex technical details clearly. But as I worked on the project, I learned to simplify and explain the information well. This improved my writing and attention to detail. Researching for the project also expanded my knowledge and thinking skills. By the end, I felt more confident in handling tough tasks, explaining technical information, and using what I learned in real life.
All together, my time taking this class has been a valuable learning experience that helped me grow a lot. Working on different assignments and projects improved my skills and confidence. I learned how to write better resumes, create lab reports, work well in teams, and explain technical details clearly. These experiences made me better at communicating, researching, and working with others. They also showed me how to use what I learned in real-life situations. As I continue my education, I feel ready and confident for the future.
